Complete Destruction of UPS caused by loose connection

On Father''s Day, 2003 we received a telephone call from one of our customers. The customer asked us to autopsy this UPS to determine the cause of this excessive and costly fire.  The findings appeared to be a loose battery connection. Customer claims a connection had been "sparking" for several days prior to what's shown here. Customer thought this arcing could wait until a work day! A battery PM would have prevented this.

Did You Know?

Did you know the battery system is the weak link in a UPS--especially if you have only one string of batteries, which are what most customers have?

If a power failure occurs and your battery string has bad cells or loose connections, you can be assured that your system WILL crash! System crashes are costly and could have been avoided had you had an analysis of your battery system!

On average, about 45% of the power strings we test yearly have a multitude of problems ranging in order from:

  • Loose connections
  • Over-temperature environments
  • Corrosion on battery terminals
  • The standard aging process
  • Low electrolyte (stationary batteries)
  • Improper installation and torquing

Capacity testing serves three important purposes: To determine the capacity of the battery; to determine whether the battery is capable of supporting the connected load for the specified duration; and to reveal internal conduction path issues that cannot be determined through other processes.

Having peace of mind that your batteries WILL provide uninterrupted power during an outage is what you need!  Critical Power Systems, Inc. can offer you that piece of mind!

We provide the technical knowledge along with the sophisticated testing  equipment required to generate a detailed report outlining the conditions of your batteries as they currently exist.

This report allows you to make informed decisions if problems are found and what needs to be done to insure the state of these batteries--whether a full battery replacement is needed or if only a few batteries need to be replaced.

Please contact us for more information. We will be happy to provide a quotation on battery testing, replacement batteries. You will be surprised at how little this investment actually cost!
